Job Description:
An exciting opportunity has arisen to join the GXO Logistics Engineering Team at a major blue-chip National Distribution Centre in Wigan. This highly automated facility supports the operations of a leading global brand and houses over 76,000 pallets within its advanced distribution environment.

The site utilises a wide range of state-of-the-art automated material handling equipment, including conveyors, automated storage and retrieval systems (ASRS), automated wrapping systems, packaging lines, robotic picking units, and Automated Guided Vehicles (AGVs). All systems are maintained by the on-site engineering team to ensure maximum operational efficiency and reliability.

As a Mechatronics Engineering Apprentice, you will work alongside experienced engineers, gaining hands-on experience while supporting the maintenance and operation of these automated systems.

Key Responsibilities
Reporting to the Shift Engineer, your duties will include:
• Supporting the Shift Engineer in maintaining maximum availability of automated systems
• Assisting with planned, preventative, and reactive maintenance activities
• Supervising and assisting external contractors and subcontractors
• Managing and maintaining spare parts and consumables inventory
• Ensuring full compliance with site health and safety standards
• Undertaking specialist training to support your development
• Working in accordance with engineering safe systems of work
• Liaising with operational teams and other departments to identify and resolve technical issues while minimising operational disruption

Training & Development
Your apprenticeship will include a combination of practical on-site experience and structured training:
• Year 1: Attend Alliance Learning in Horwich four days per week for technical training, alongside workplace experience.
• Year 2 onwards: Day release once per week at Alliance Learning while continuing practical training on site.

You will be working towards a Level 3 Apprenticeship Standard in Mechatronics Maintenance Technician, gaining valuable industry experience within a highly automated logistics environment.
